So I was looking through some old pictures and came across the 80’s era. It was a time of MTV, Roller skating, Rubiks Cube, Dungeons and Dragons, Asteroids, Space Invaders, and Pitfall. My high school had a Break Dancing Club. Preppies wore Izod, Benetton, deck shoes and fancy belts. They listened to “New Wave” Flock of Seagulls, Modern English, Frankie Says, Rock me Amadeus, and She Blinded me with Science.
Boys dressed in parachute pants with zippers all over and really thin ties. Mohawks, vests, fingerless gloves and trench coats were also popular. As were Converse sneakers, rolled sleeves, Ray Bans, Ocean Pacific and concert tees. The big thing in my school was the boys would run up behind a girl in the hallway and try to bend the metal emblem on the back of our designer jeans.
Jordache, Calvin Kleins, Sassoon, and Sergio Valente’s. Slouch socks with pixie boots and wide belts. Pastel colors, long t-shirts, crop tops, rubber bracelets, exercise wear and way too many Swatches. Mini skirts, safety pins, Keds, LA Gear, and pony tails on the side of the head.
Here I am in head-to-toe 80’s garb. Feathered hair, sweater with shoulder pads, Jordache jeans, and Leg warmers…If you look closely, that may even be a Roach clip feather with beads behind my right ear!! I think I was 14 or 15. The funny thing is that I really thought I looked cool.
Go on and get your jollies!!

We talked like Valley Girls, Like fer shur! And said things like,"Gag me with a spoon and Barf me out! Omygod, he’s so rad and totally tubular, Like to the max!"
Okay, so maybe I didn’t talk that way.... but a lot of my friends did.
So now that I've jarred your memory and publicly embarassed myself just for your amusement -- What were some of your crimes of fashion growing up?

jelly bracelets & shoes, hydro-color tshirts that change color with heat, hair in a banana clip (not to be confused with a banana hammock), blue eyeshadow & mascara, enough aquanet on the feathered hair that it didn't move, & occasionally Lee Press on Nails. LMAO!

Lori - thanks for the memory! I don't think there is a fashion crime that you or WCD didn't hit - that I, too, had to commit! I can carry it a few years later into the early 90s and think about acid wash jeans, pegged and rolled. Leggings with matching long, colorful shirts from Express. Wool short shorts with blazer jackets and matching tights. Tights with the feet cut off under mini skirts. The list is endless!

Wow, you sexy b***h, you! Hahaha. I def. wore leg warmers, the gloves that changed color when they got cold, those shirts that changed color when you sweated so if the shirt was orange the armpits were blue or something stupid like that. Maybe that was the 90s though. What about pinch-rolling your jeans? Late 80s/early 90s?

WCD -- totally forgot about the aquanet, how could I?
How did I miss out on the gloves, shirts that changed color??? I did used to wear a mood ring that changed color but must have missed the boat on the mood clothing....

Hate to admit it but what's missing for me is the Pat Benatar and Madonna look. I occassionally had chains and bandanas wrapped around the thighs and the thin black rubber bracelets to boot. On dress down days when the punk rock didn't take over there was dads oversized flannel, blue jeans and white high top sneakers or workboots (because my ex-boyfriend found them sexy)! Fun times...

GIRL!!! My hair was bigger than a lion's mane. POOF!!!!
Black LA Gear's w/ a neon green bandana wrapped around my ankle. Big slouch socks. Black bike shorts-you know the skin tight ones. Then a neon pink sweatshirt that hung off my shoulders. oooowww-sexy me!!! I sure thought I was the shit then!!!
My mom was so great she NEVER made fun of the way I looked. Sometimes I wish she had. Oh the memories--thanks!!! HA!
Adios!
