Big Oil and all that is wrong with the world
May 09, 2007

Started my morning off by leaving the house without my car keys effectively locking myself out, making me late for work. Followed by a most hellacious day that was capped off by an emergency trip to the nearest gas station on the way home due to an almost empty tank of gas flashing light and alarm going off in my jeep.....of course I am pmsing.

Granted I drive a V8, but I actually paid $60.00 for regular unleaded to fill up my tank here in Connecticut today @ $3.41 a gallon. According to the national averages I’ve seen, we are about as high as California and Washington right now. WTF… It’s even worse than it was in September ’05 after Hurrican Katrina. Fucking gougers are out in full force too because then driving along, just a scant 15 miles north from station A, I passed station B selling regular for $3.05.

Dirty bastards.

All of this national treason and market manipulation going on, meanwhile the front page of every fucking newspaper in our country is littered with headlines and images of poor Paris Hilton begging for pardon so she doesn't have to go to the clink for a DUI since mummy and daddy weren't able to buy her way out of this one.

What kind of f'ed up world are we living in?

Here we are in the middle of a national crisis that is affecting real, honest, hard working, law abiding motorists and this is the crap we have shoved down our throats??

Did I mention I was PMS'ing?

Who else has received this email chain letter instructing the internet community to not fuel up on May 15th?

> > DON'T PUMP GAS ON MAY 15

Are you going to do it? I will if you do.

Even if average internet marketing conversions hold true here, and only 1% of the 73 million webbies who didn’t hit delete or let the announcement get lost in their spam filter, actually act…..that would almost equal as many fans as have signed "Free Paris" petitions, created "Free Paris" websites, or are profiteering off of their "Free Paris" t shirts.

Fucking A.

What does that mean anyway? It was a big saying in the 80's but I never knew exactly what the "A" was referring to. I just like saying it because it sounds so succinct.

I'm curious to know if the current gas hikes have made anyone become more conservative on their driving excursions? Mine are a necessity to get to work and back for the most part or when I need to escape for my mental well being.

Do any of you financial analysts foresee the prices going down again anytime soon?

What are the prices where you all live?

Talk to me.

Your rant so sounds like me when I'm PMSing! Gas prices in Cincinnati area - 2.98 down from a little over 3.00 yesterday. Filled up the Surburban to the tune of $100 - so thankful that my daily commute is from my bedroom to my home office!

I'll do it! I pledge to not buy gas with zipcar's money on may 15th. :)

Come to my neck of the woods... gas is $2.89 right now. That's the highest it has been since Katrina.

I'm actually working from home today. I'm going to talk to my boss to see if I can do it once a week. Not only do the gas prices suck, but it is a 92 mile round-trip!!! That REEEEAAAALLLLY sucks!

I pledge to not buy any gas on the 15th... guess I need to fill 'er up on the 14th, huh? :)

Not much better here in California. Gas prices in the Los Angeles area ranges from $3.27 to almost $4.00 according to http://www.losangelesgasprices.com/ or www.gasbuddy.com. This site comes in handy when trying to locate the cheapest gas stations in your local area.

Yesterday I payed $3.48 a gallon to fuel up my V6 Nissan Frontier. $20 got my just over a 1/4 tank. Needless to say, I hopped on the LeMond this AM and cycled to work...which I'm paying for now as I haven't gotten my wax in a few weeks, and haven't shaved, so the stubble on the buddies was NOT compatible with tight, sweaty lycra!
Anyhow, I still feel better about cycling in, and not using the dinosaur juice...going to pick up new razors on the way home though. ;)

I live in San Diego, where the gas prices are the highest in the nation. I just paid $3.59/gallon earlier today.

However, I don't believe that any kind of boycott will work. It's just not that simple. Worldwide demand for oil is only going up- it will never go down, due to industrialization in places like China and the overall growing population in the US and around the globe.

Only when gas prices reach upwards of $7 a gallon or more, will Americans 'find' the resolve to solve this situation. In America there is much capital wealth that can go into ventures, but there is no incentive to do it because the investors need to see a clear profit on the other side. $7/gallon gas will provide that.

It will be painful at first, and I'm not rich so I will definitely suffer, but you can't pretend to be a liberal (if you are) and think that a one day 'boycott' will solve anything.

We are paying $3.15 right now.
Also, I was going to play along and not get gas, but
my not so better half didn't know and we only had 5 miles left
that morning. And needless to say I only get 10 miles
to the gallon, so yea I HAD to get gas.
sorry to everyone else that played along.....
adios

A V-8? That $60 won't get you three days....and I live in Washington DC so I know what high gas prices are....

You didn't buy that V-8 10 years ago when gas prices were more reasonable...but I do have a question.....

are you towing a boat, trailer or something else on a regular basis that warranted paying 1/ MORE for the V-8 and 2/a guarantee that you would be filling up on an almost daily basis....

I am not a "greenie" and don't own a hybrid, but I do have three kids and still drive a compact Chevy Cobalt for the gas mileage alone...My son is 6'1 and fits just fine in the back seat...and my husband is 6'3 and drives the car comfortably....

Why with no kids and no purpose [towing, etc] would you ever own a V-8? I am sure that cutie Pugsley would be just great in an Aveo.....

This isn't meant to be snarky...it is honestly a question of why would you not only waste the money on the larger engine/vehicle but know your gas costs were going to be astronomical?

Lori commented May 20, 2007 09:33 PM

SkippyMom, good question. I bought a V8 for a couple reasons.

First and foremost I needed a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get around in the winter. I live in NorthWestern CT where the driving conditions can be pretty treacherous and I commute far for work so I needed a vehicle that was safe. I don't know of any 4 cyclinder 4 wheel drive vehicles that I like so I settled on the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

True I could have gotten a Jeep in a V6 which would have saved a little bit of gas, but honestly I like the power of a V8 and was willing to pay extra for more of it. Also, I work hard for a living and like driving a nice vehicle that I like looking at and feel comfortable and safe commuting in.

Lastly, I needed an SUV for the room. I can't do all the stuff I need to do in a compact car. Like when I rescue pugs I need room to fit the crates and transport them to and fro. When I do my gardening I need space for mulch bags and plants.

Btw, I do have a trailer hitch and while I dont do any regular towing, I do have brothers and friends and family who have boats, campers, and snow mobiles.

The truth is despite the soaring gas prices and all my complaining, I'm sure my next vehicle will be a V8 as well. I mean hey, the way I figure it you still gotta live...

SkippyMom commented May 22, 2007 05:17 PM

That makes perfect sense to own an SUV - tho' having sold Jeeps for a few years [don't hate me...I was an honest car salesperson...I only quit when they wanted me to start lying!] I am still partial to the regular V-6 Jeep Cherokee, not the Grand...is the steering still loose on them? Then again I don't live in CT [which I didn't know about you...I bet it is spectacular!] and the rescue/gardening all makes sense now....

I just know the only places I drive during the week are to the girl's schools [about 25 miles per day]...and I only have to fill up once a week...but that is lucky me....

Ask me about SkippyHusband....go ahead...giggle...He drives a V-6 Chevy Blazer 4 door [this is our camping vehicle and his work truck] and he drives on average 100+ miles per day in the ol' stop & go Wash, DC traffic....yeah we are eating a lot of mac & cheese....heehee!

Thanks so much for explaining it....and the skinny jeans thing? TOO FUNNY...I feel for you....5'8 & 135 lbs but after this many kids....uh, it ain't happening here either....I fit well in the low rise flared numbers .... but they are so uncomfortable...I hate to sit down in them..

Lori commented May 22, 2007 06:06 PM

Funny! My previous vehicle b4 this one was the. Regular Jeep Cherokee V6.....hahahahaha. I upgraded to the Grand Cherokee V8 and honestly the gas price isn't much different. All the extras in this one make the small difference well worth it to me..
