allergic.....to everything
September 26, 2010

Plum had a bad allergic reaction to her kidney medication Enalapril. She broke out with these big hive type blood blisters all over her mouth and her neck and feet are also a mess :(

We now have to strip her off of all new medication for a month while we treat the secondary infection it caused and get her cleared up again. Oy.

For now all I can do is pump her full of the maximum dosage of Benadryl possible and try to keep her comfortable. .Easier said than done, poor baby is crawling out of her skin. At least the Benadryl makes her sleepy and the only time she doesn't itch herself is when she's asleep.

Tough times.

Poor Plum I feel so bad for her.
Just the sight of that makes me itch.
It is a good thing she is in the best hands ever.
Out of the 4 only Lola has any allergic reaction, she gets these pimples all over her belly it looks terrible but thank goodness it does not seem to bother her in any way. The other one she gets on her bum, a rash that itches her. Luckily it seems to clear up fast with the meds.
Now we are going to start wiping her bum after she goes to see if that helps. Sunshine gets her bum wiped every time now we will have 2 pugs with the cleanest bums in town :). If you told me 10 years ago I would be doing this I would have never believed it.
I sure hope Plum gets back on track soon, love seeing all her pics.
You are the best Lori

I know this won't cure the allergy, but have you tried the Canus Goats Milk line of dog shampoo? They have one for itchy, irritated skin and it has been a godsend with my puggy. Actually, Canus Goats Milk Soap has been a godsend to me, as I have very sensitive skin. Anything I would use on Miss B must be good enough to use on me, right?

Hi Michelle, thanks for the suggestion.

Plum is actually on 3 different kinds of veterinarian prescribed medicated shampoos, an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and and anti-inflammatory. she gets bathed at least 3 times a week. I normally rotate them every other day. but right now her skin is all infected so we are mainly using the super strong antibacterial shampoo. I would be way too afraid to bathe her in any over the counter brand of dog shampoo, even the ones at the health food store that are "all natural" contain essential oils and other additives that would make her skin freak out even more. when I say she is allergic to everything, i'm not exaggerating...i mean everything. she is even allergic to herself, her own body seems to attack itself from the inside, out! that's whats really going on here...it's so sad to see :(

I hope they go away soon and new medication is found that doesn't bother her :(
